Guided Mountain Bike Tours at Tokai MTB Trails

Cape Town's Premier Local Trail System

Located on the slopes of Constantiaberg within the Table Mountain National Park World Heritage Site, Tokai MTB Park is Cape Town's premier mountain biking destination. Following the historical 2015 fires, the landscape is now defined by open mountain, Fynbos-covered vistas rather than closed forest canopies, exposing sweeping views across the peninsula. Featuring a structured network of steady mountain road climbs and world-class singletrack descents, Tokai delivers an exceptional day on the bike for intermediate to advanced riders.

At Cape Adventures, our guided Tokai tours are crafted to help you navigate this extensive mountain network smoothly, ensuring you ride the best lines suited to your skill level while enjoying professional equipment setup and seamless logistics.

Signature Trail Highlights at Tokai

Tokai is celebrated for its distinct split between flowing intermediate routes and high-consequence technical lines:

The Snake Trails (Cobra to Rinkhals)

  • Cobra (Black): Cobra starts with a rocky, open exposure traverse into a tight slopey switchback - giving reason for its Black grading. The lower section of Cobra features some technical rock navigation.

  • Mamba (Blue) & Boomslang (Blue): Flowing intermediate singletrack linking the upper levels with expertly shaped berms and playful transitions.

  • Snake Eyes (Blue) & Rinkhals (Blue): Fast, rhythmic lower sections that keep the momentum high right down to the trail intersections.

The Downhill Line (DH0 to DH4)

  • DH0 (Double Black Diamond): Tokai's highest test of nerve and skill, the top section features steep technical rock navigation, step-downs and drop-offs.

  • DH1 – DH4 (Black): The famous progressive downhill sequence featuring plenty of drop-offs and step-downs and rock feature navigation, This leads into the lower section with high-speed table tops, drops, berms and finishing with a tight rock garden section.

Vasbyt

Vasbyt (Blue/Green options): A local favourite offering a brilliant mix of flowing turns and technical challenges, providing an fast exhilarating descent back toward the lower level.

Silver Loop Extension (For Longer Rides)

For riders looking to extend their distance and test their fitness, the Silvermine Loop (Green) extends the ride out toward Silvermine Nature Reserve. This scenic extension rewards your efforts with spectacular, sweeping views overlooking Silvermine Dam and the Atlantic expanse of Hout Bay before descending back into the park.

What to Expect on Your Guided Ride

Riding a new mountain network can mean spending more time checking maps than enjoying the descent.

With Cape Adventures, every detail of your ride is taken care of:

  • Trailhead Briefing & Bike Customisation: We typically meet at Peddlars on the Bend restaurant parking area in Constantia or outside the Forest Glade Centre in Tokai. Your high-performance full-suspension rental bike is adjusted specifically for your height, weight and riding style—including tyre pressures, suspension sag and pedal selection (flats or SPDs).

  • Pacing & Route Selection: Your guide selects a sequence of trails that matches your technical ability and endurance level. Whether you want a physical workout with 1,000 meters of climbing or a gravity-assisted flow session, the route is adapted on the fly.

  • Local Knowledge & Technique Tips: Learn the optimal line choices through Tokai's signature rock features and loose-over-hardpack turns, with real-time feedback from guides who have ridden these slopes for decades.

  • Post-Ride Coffee & Refreshments: Finish the ride at the lower forest coffee hub or enjoy a cold beer at one of the many garden pubs.

Seasonality, Climate & Trail Conditions

Tokai is a year-round riding destination, with the trail character changing naturally with the seasons. During the warmer, drier summer months, the trails are generally firm, fast and dry, with some loose gravel and dust adding to the fun. The cooler winter months bring rain and, when the trails have dried sufficiently, excellent grip and a more compact, tacky surface. Spring and autumn often offer the best of both worlds, with moderate temperatures and ideal trail conditions.
