As such, these trails typically fall into the intermediate to advanced skill categories. The best trails suited for beginners and novice riders will be covered in a follow-up article. In this series, we'll explore the top 5 mountain biking trails in Cape Town, emphasising the scenic beauty, skill requirements, bike recommendations and access requirements.

The pearl of Cape Town’s mountain biking venues. Situated on the eastern slopes of the Constantiaberg mountain in the southern suburbs of Cape Town, these trails had their beginnings in the early 1990’s. Tokai Park, formally Tokai Forest, is part of the Table Mountain National Park and managed by SANParks. The MTB trails are managed and maintained by TokaiMTB who, together, form a symbiotic tapestry that beautifully weaves together conservation and recreation.

2. Hoogekraal

The first Hoogekraal MTB trails were established in 2012. Since then the venue has exploded into an extensive trail network, with the latest addition being the recent Hoogies Hammer, a 2km of epic flow trail. There are trails to tantalise beginners and thrill experienced riders - a haven for every mountain biker.

3. Banhoek

If mountain bike trails were beauty contestants, Banhoek would be the crowned queen. The establishment of the MTB trails at Banhoek by a group of local farmers, embodies their aspiration to harmonise human recreation with the inherent natural beauty of the area. The pristine trails are lovingly cared for and are kept in mint condition by a dedicated and somewhat perfectionist maintenance crew.


4. Jonkershoek

The Jonkershoek Nature Reserve just outside Stellenbosch offers world-class mountain biking through a towering and majestic landscape. When you know how to ride, this is where you belong. “Jonkers” is not well suited to beginners, at least not in its entirety, and there are a plethora of blue, red, black and double black trails to tantalise your taste for adventure and test your metal.


5. Oak Valley

Oak Valley finds its home in Elgin. It boasts premier XC mountain biking terrain, enhanced by its cool climate, ensuring near-ideal conditions for riders. The diverse trail system caters to all skill levels, from Racing Snakes to Weekend Warriors with their families. Oak Valley is renowned for its well-maintained single tracks. The trail offers both a short blue route and a longer red route, connected to black loops for advanced riders.
